Black and white photograph of a monkey taken at The Saint Louis Zoological Park (recognised worldwide for its innovative approaches to animal care and management, wildlife conservation, research and education).
I like to engage with animals gently by observing them and giving them space. I used that approach with this monkey and he came closer to me. He looked at me for a while then moved away so I feel lucky to have captured this image. It was a dark day, and the light was shining on his face, so I enhanced the dark areas and came up with this powerful and intense image. I am not a fan of animals in captivity as I believe they ultimately belong in the wild, although I do recognise the amazing work that zoos do to help conserve certain wildlife. This was my reason for titling this image ‘Captive Monkey’. I think the monkey’s intense look represents the fierceness of what captivity can do to a monkey.
